Heritage in Action at The Cockpit

We’re proud to share the next phase of our ongoing conservation work at The Cockpit in Eton, a rare and historically significant timber-framed structure that we’re carefully restoring with full respect for its architectural legacy.

Featured here is a sample wattle and daub panel we’ve created as part of the conservation review process. It showcases the intricate craftsmanship behind this ancient technique—hazel rods (wattles) interwoven and coated in a specialist daub mix that reflects both historic composition and performance.

This panel has been prepared for inspection to ensure it meets both structural and heritage standards before full-scale reinstatement begins. Every detail is designed to reflect the building’s original fabric while enhancing its durability.

With wall works now imminent, we’re excited to continue bringing this remarkable piece of Eton’s built history back to life—one daubed panel at a time.
